Our research is published in #1 general chemistry journal

Olena Kudina and Andriy Voronov, in collaboration with Scott Pryor, Associate professor in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at NDSU, group and a research group from Clarkson University published their recent research in Angewandte Chemie International Edition, leading journal in general chemistry.

The work is entitled “Highly Efficient Phase Boundary Biocatalysis with Enzymogel Nanoparticles” and introduces principally novel mechanism of biocatalysis – phase boundary biocatalysis, when being encapsulated the enzyme molecules (biocatalyst) remain mobile in a soft (polymer) carrier. Not only this unique finding can be explored for localized highly efficient bioconversion processes, but also it opens a new avenue for variety of applications, including drug delivery and absorbable implants. The uniqueness of these capsules is in their ability to protect enzymatic activity, enable simple reuse/recovery of enzymes, and provide an efficient way to regulate enzymatic reactions. It is expected that the developed technology will enhance enzyme efficiency during bioconversion and reduce cost of biocatalyst.

With its current Impact Factor (IF) of 13.734 the Angewandte Chemie, is at leading position among the general chemistry journals. The journal appears weekly and is one of the prime chemistry journals in the world, with an IF higher than those of comparable journals.

The published manuscript is co-authored by Sergiy Minko, Professor of Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY, his students Andriy Zakharchenko and Alexander Tokarev, as well as by group of researchers from Institute of Polymer Research in Dresden, Germany, and Olena Kudina, graduate student in Voronov’s group at NDSU.

Olena  and Andriy received Valspar graduate student scholarship

Graduate students Olena Kudina and Andriy Popadyuk are among first recipients of Valspar scholarship at the department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials in NDSU! The Valspar Foundation contributed $20,000 to support graduate student scholarships and summer undergraduate research program at Coatings and Polymeric Materials department at NDSU. A selection committee consisting of NDSU faculty and Valspar’s technical leaders announced the first Valspar Graduate Scholars Program awards to five students at CPM, including Andriy and Olena. Each graduate student will receive $3,000 to support the students’ studies at NDSU’s Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials for the 2013-2014 academic year. The scholarship program is administered through the Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials at NDSU and coordinated through the NDSU Development Foundation. Congratulations to Olena and Andriy!

Olena worked five weeks in Mayo Clinic

During October – November, Olena worked for five weeks as a research trainee in Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. She was working as a part of research team in Orthopedic Surgery Department (the group led by Dr.Michael J. Yaszemski) under supervision of Dr. Maran Avudaiappan on Mayo Clinic main campus. Olena’s research was a part of collaborative project between two groups on developing novel responsive polymer drug delivery systems for treatment of bone cancer (osteosarcoma). These drug delivery systems are based on amphiphilic invertible polymers recently synthesized in Voronov’s group. Novel polymeric carriers were tested for delivery of natural drug candidate – curcumin.

Mayo Clinic is one of the world’s leading health care and research facilities, ranked as the #3 overall hospital in US. Scientists working at the Mayo Clinic research facilities are conducting extensive research on understanding diseases  (in particular, cancer research) as well as translation of possible treatments into practice.

Two new papers on New Oligomers Synthesis are published

Our work titled “PEG and Cholesterol-Containing Pyromellitates: Synthesis and Self-Assembly”  authors, Olena Kudina, Ihor Tarnavchyk, Olena Khomenko, Olga Budishevska, Stanislav Voronov, Andriy Voronov, was recently published in Wiley journal Macromolecular Chemistry and Physics.  In this work we report about synthesis of novel biocompatible and biodegradable macromolecules comprised of cholesterol that self-assemble an aqueous solutions.  The synthetic approach provides a direct way to control macromolecular self-assembly. High solubilization capacity and biodegradability of assemblies, as well as other colloidal properties (size distribution, etc.), make the synthesized macromolecules good candidates for biomedical applications, including drug delivery.

Another paper titled “Amphiphilic oligomers based on diesters of pyromellitic acid for the solubilization of lipophilic agents” authored by Оlena Khomenko, Olga Budishevska, Аndriy Voronov, Оlena Kudina, Ihor Tarnavchyk and Stanislav Voronov will be published in Avestia journal International Journal of Theoretical and Applied Nanotechnology. The paper describes the synthesis, micellization and solubilization of new amphiphilic oligomeric surfactants, diesters of pyromellitic acid. The surface active oligomers of this type can be used for various applications such as surfactants for emulsion polymerization, for the development of drug delivery systems, etc.

Our group returns for measurements at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Each of our two proposals, “SANS study on self-assembly of amphiphilic pseudo-poly(amino acids) in aqueous media” and “SANS study of amphiphilic pseudo-poly(amino acids) and DNA complex formation for gene delivery” are awarded 2 days of beam-time for measurements on instrument BL-6 Extended Q-Range SANS (EQ-SANS) at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, TN.

The measurements are planned for Spring 2014. It will be our 5th visit to this unique neutron research facility during last four years to carry the investigation of amphiphilic polymers synthesized in the lab.

Voronov organizes a symposium at ICNFA’14 in Prague

Andriy Voronov organizes a symposium “Engineering at Biointerfaces” at the 5th International Conference on Nanotechnolgy: Fundamentals and Applications (ICNFA’14) held in Prague, Czech Republic, in August 2014.

The aim of this symposium is to exchange information, knowledge and fundamental understanding on structure and properties of interfaces between biomolecules (DNA, RNA, proteins, antibody) of cells, cell membranes, tissues or complex biological systems and engineered polymer-based materials. Subject areas of this symposium include but are not limited to biofilms, implants, medical devices, tissue engineering, proteins, polysaccharides and other biomacromolecules at biointerfaces, engineering cell micro and nanoenvironments for regenerative medicine, structuring and functionalization of biointerfaces with polymers, antimicrobial biointerfaces, biomineralization at biointerfaces, antifouling and biotribology.

Voronov gives two invited presentations at professional conferences

Voronov participated in Particles 2013: Particles in Composites and Related Advanced Materials conference and gave an invited presentation titled “Synthesis of surface-functionalized latex particles using polyperoxide reactive surfactant in emulsion polymerization” (authors A. Voronov, A. Popadyuk, I. Tarnavchyk, N. Popadyuk, A. Kohut, V. Samaryk, S. Voronov). This conference was hold in Dayton, OH on August, 3-6.

Particles is an international conference examining the science, technology, and business aspects of particle-based composites. The conference targets practicing scientists, engineers, managers, innovators, and entrepreneurs. It has a single track of approximately 28 invited lectures.

Voronov gave also an invited presentation at American Chemical Society Fall meeting. He participated in Roy W. Tess Award: Symposium in Honor of Gordon P. Bierwagen. The topic of his presentation was “Functional polyperoxides for fabrication of 3D polymer coatings on a planar or dispersed substrate surface” (authors Volodymyr Samaryk, Andriy Voronov, Igor Tarnavchyk, Sergiy Varvarenko, Natalya Nosova, Ananiy Kohut, Stanislav Voronov). The 246th American Chemical Society Fall meeting was hold in Indianapolis, IN on September, 8-12.

New funding received

New funding of up to $93,917 is received from United Soybean Board for the project “Novel Soy-Based Nonionic Polymeric Surfactants for Personal Care Applications” in collaboration with Dr. Bret Chisholm from Centre of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at NDSU.

This is a continuation of the research started in July, 2011. The objective for the 3rd year of the proposal is testing of biodegradability of the developed during the project soybean-based polymeric surfactants and sampling of select soybean-based polymer surfactants compositions to the company partners in order to determine their utility directly in various commercial personal care products.

Voronov organizes symposium on Anticancer Research in Nanotechnology

Andriy Voronov organized a symposium on Nanotechnology in Anticancer Research at the 4th International Conference on Nanotechnology: Fundamentals and Applications (ICNFA’2013). The conference was held at the Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada, Aug. 12-14.

The scope of the organized symposium was to provide most up-to-date development of novel nanotechnology-based approaches towards cancer treatment to the nanotechnology-field scientific community. Special emphasis is given to integrated nanotherapeutic systems (including theranostic nanomedicine) and multifunctional designs with cancer targeting, imaging and controlled release properties.

In the symposium, thirteen speakers shared their expertise in the various aspects of cancer treatment nanotechnology with the aim of exposing participants to a wide spectrum of novel and developing strategies of diagnostics and treatments, and to foster crosspollination of ideas and developing new research interests. Professors from Purdue University, University of Pennsylvania, Northeastern University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Utah, etc. present the invited talks at the symposium.

At the ICNFA’2013 in Toronto, Andriy also served as a scientific committee member for the conference program and gave two oral presentations “Hybrid Polymer-Decorated Magnetic Silica Carriers of Enzymes For Biomass Hydrolysis” (authors, Kudina, O., Voronov, A., Samaratunga, A., Nahar, N., Pryor, S., Ionov, L., Minko. Summer undergraduate student worked in our group for ten weeks

Gina Weiss, undergraduate student from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN joined our group end of May in terms of Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program.

SURE program is operated by Coatings and Polymeric Materials Department to provide undergraduate students (usually juniors and seniors) the opportunity to experience a research environment and to encourage them to pursue a higher degree. Coatings and Polymeric Materials offers this program each year. The program serves in educating the next generation of specialists in the field of polymers and coatings, as many students who attend this program return to Coatings and Polymeric Materials Department in NDSU for the graduate school.

Gina is a junior majoring in Chemistry. She worked in the lab under supervision of Olena Kudina. The title of Gina’s research project was “Curcumin Loading of Amphiphilic Invertible Polymer and Oligomer Micellar Assemblies”.

Two NDSU Governor School worked in our lab for six weeks

Laura McGuigon from Davies High School, Fargo, ND and Brielle VanOrman from Richardton-Taylor High School, Richardton, ND worked in our group in June – July as a part of ND Governor’s School Program 2013.

Olena Kudina was mentoring Brielle, and Laura was mentored by Andriy Popadyuk. Both students shared the research project titled “Oligomer Assemblies for delivery of Poorly Water-Soluble Drugs”.

North Dakota Governor’s School in Science and Mathematics is summer residential academic program for sophomore and junior high school students with an interest in science or mathematics.

Voronov becomes an Associate Editor

Andriy Voronov accepted the invitation to become an Associate Editor of International Journal on Theoretical and Applied Nanotechnology (IJTAN). The journal is an open access journal and is published by International Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology (International ASET Inc.). IJTAN welcomes research and review papers related to all Nanotechnology fields.

Paper in Reactive and Functional Polymers is published

Our paper work titled ‘A novel copolymer of N-[(tert-butylperoxy)methyl]acrylamide and maleic anhydride for use as a reactive surfactant in emulsion polymerization‘ authored by Andriy Popadyuk, Ihor Tarnavchyk, Nadiya Popadyuk, Ananiy Kohut, Volodymyr Samaryk, Stanislav Voronov, Andriy Voronov was published in Elsevier journal Reactive and Functional Polymers.

In this paper we reported about a new copolymer that was synthesized and employed as a reactive surfactant (inisurf) for the emulsion polymerization of styrene to yield surface-functionalized (peroxidized) reactive latex particles. We expect that this novel copolymer will be a promising and efficient material in the synthesis of functional polymer nanoparticles with well-defined core–shell morphologies.

Tenure and Promotion is awarded to Voronov

Andriy Voronov’s promotion to Associate Professor in the department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials at NDSU is approved by NDSU President Dean Bresciani. The Andriy’s tenure at the Coatings and Polymeric Materials department is approved by the State Board of Higher Education.

Voronov attended ACS Spring 2013 meeting in New Orleans, LA

Andriy Voronov traveled to New Orleans to attend 245th American Chemical Society meeting to present recent results obtained in our research group. His oral presentation at Biofuels and Sustainable Energy session of Division of Biochemical Technology was titled “Hybrid Polymer-Decorated Magnetic Silica Carriers of Enzymes For Biomass Hydrolysis” (authors Olena Kudina, Ashani Samaratunga, Nurun Nahar, Leonid Ionov, Sergiy Minko, Scott Pryor, Andriy Voronov). The group also brought two poster presentations to New Orleans. Both posters were presented at POLY/PMSE joint poster session. The topics of these posters were: “Poly(ethylene glycol)-containing pseudo-poly(amino acids) as a novel type of biodegradable functional macromolecules” (authors Sergiy Varvarenko, Stanislav Voronov, Nataliia Puzko, Volodymyr Samaryk, Natalya Nosova, Ihor Tarnavchyk, Andriy Voronov) and “Environment-driven mechanism of drug release from invertible polymeric micellar assemblies” (authors Ivan Hevus, Amit Modgil, Justin W Daniels, Ananiy Kohut, Chengwen Sun, Shane J. National Science Foundation approves extension of the current grant

NSF has approved no cost extension of our current research grant on enzymes immobilization on  polymer brush-decorated nanoparticles for reuse and recovery on enzymes in bioconversion processes, awarded by Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental and Transport Systems Division CBET of NSF, number 0966574. The revised expiration date for the NSF grant is therefore June, 2014.

Andrej Zvelindovsky from UK visited our group and gave a department seminar presentation

Professor Andrej Zvelindovsky, Head of Computational and Theoretical Physics group at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, United Kingdom visited our group on March, 26-28.   He met with members of the group and presented his research at the joint Coatings and Polymeric Materials / Physics department seminar. The title of Andrej’s presentation is “Block copolymers in confinements and under external fields”. We are very happy to have Andrej in Fargo!

Instructional Development Grant is awarded

NDSU Senate Faculty Affairs Committee selected proposal titled “Polymer Practicum: Hybrid, Creative, Collaborative Learning Course Development” developed by Dr. Andriy Voronov for funding with a budget of $2,997.

This grant is intended to provide support for the development of new courses leading to improvement in student learning. Project contains innovative approaches to improve student learning through the development of new methods, instructional materials, or alternative instructional delivery systems. The proposal demonstrated that the project surpasses traditional expectation of course development and revision.

The awarded funds will be spent for the development of new course ‘Polymer Practicum’,  offered during the 2013 Spring semester at NDSU for the first time.

Voronov co-mentors NATURE program proposal

As a participant of NATURE Research Mentoring Program Dr. Andriy Voronov becomes a co-mentor for Jaylen Schlenvogt and Kateri Azure, students at Turtle Mountain Community College, Belcourt, ND on a project titled “Comparison of HPLC Determination of Nitrates in Vegetable and Meat Samples with Ion Selective Electrode Method.”  Audrey LaVallie will serve as students Tribal College Faculty mentor. The project is planned for Spring 2013.

Nurturing American Tribal Undergraduate Research and Education (NATURE) is an educational outreach program sponsored by the North Dakota Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (ND EPSCoR). NATURE is designed to build new and strengthen existing pathways for American Indian students to pursue careers in such fields as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The program was designed for the participation of students and faculty from all five North Dakota tribal colleges, high schools students and teachers from the four North Dakota Indian reservations, and faculty from two research universities in North Dakota – North Dakota State University (NDSU) and University of North Dakota (UND).

New ‘Polymer Practicum’ course is offered

Andriy Voronov will be teaching ‘Polymer Practicum’ – the new course offered for senior-level undergraduate and graduate students, for the first time during the 2013 Spring semester. This course offers students a hands-on experience with the important classic and modern laboratory techniques of synthesis and characterization of macromolecules, to learn the specifics of experimental design, analysis, interpretation and evaluation of data in polymer chemistry, and the effective communication of findings in the form of laboratory reports.

The core of this new course consists of a set of laboratory work-hours in which students will be expected to participate in a variety of experiments on basic, fundamental aspects of polymer synthesis, characterization, and properties.

New project will be funded

The proposal titled “Evaluation of Effectiveness of Soy-Based Polymeric Surfactants in Shampoo Formulations”, in collaboration with Dr. Bret Chisholm from Centre of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at NDSU, will be funded by North Dakota Soybean Council (NDSC).

The NDSC awarded $65,572 for the research beginning on July 1, 2013. The project’s goal is to evaluate the properties of soybean-based polymeric surfactants, to check the their applicability as novel biobased materials for formulating new natural shampoos.

Exchange Scholar from Ukraine joins the group in February, 2013

Graduate student Oksana Zholobko from Organic Chemistry Department at Lviv Polytechnic National University, Lviv, Ukraine was awarded a grant from the Ukrainian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports to visit and carry research project at Coatings and Polymeric Materials Department. She will be working in our group for 6 months beginning February, 2013. Her research will be focused on colloid systems and biocompatible coatings based on synthetic and biopolymers for drug delivery applications. The goal of her project is to design, synthesize and study the new biocompatible coatings and drug delivery systems.

Oksana received his Bachelor of Engineering in  2010, graduated from at Lviv Polytechnic National University in 2011. Currently Oksana is enrolled as a full-time graduate student in Organic Chemistry Department at Lviv Polytechnic National University, Lviv, Ukraine.
